How absence of seats impact both learners and teachers negatively!!!!

 Dear diary

It's been long since my last entry. Allow me reintroduce myself.

My name is Fred Sunday, Mugisha. I teach Numeracy and English to Primary Two children at St Kalori Bugwe Primary School in Ivukula Sub-county, Bukono County, Namutumba District in Eastern Uganda.

P.2 Learners writing an exam
Did you know that the 167 learners we registered this year in 2023 all sit on the floor?
Have you ever given it a thought how this, impact both the learners and the teachers? How it impacts the set classroom goals and vision like good handwriting, classroom management and discipline, collaboration in groups, differentiation according to individual learner's ability, among others?

I have. And I witness this every day in my class. Absence of seats first and foremost, especially in a classroom with a large number such as mine impedes classroom management and disciplinary values. There is no physical space for me and my co-teacher to traverse. And since the teacher cannot move freely, learners tend to feel the liberty to engage in other activities other than giving their full attention; the learners are also not able to feel the presence of the teacher in their midst - something which is psychologically effective in the classroom.

In addition to that, collaboration and group work is next to impossible but still, as an educator - I must make do. This is an essential skill that I impart to my learners due to its relevance in this century and the centuries to come thus nurturing it in young children is a good way to help them master its art.

Since the short pupils, the academically challenged, the obstinate learners are put in front for proper support and monitoring, they miss the opportunity to mix with other fast paced and well behaved learners. Not all pupils can understand directly from an instructor, others understand best in the company of their peers. It is an important feat for an educator to differentiate learners according to their abilities, render the needed support and correct misbehaviors if and when it surfaces. In a classroom with no definite sitting structure where a learner is sitting in a spot today and tomorrow is at another - this makes it very difficult to monitor progress and offer continuous support.

Learners struggle to write notes, the weaker ones struggle to improve their handwriting on the floor in a bent down posture. This exposure for a long time can cause back strain and pain - the long term impact can even be worse. In 2022 second term, almost half of my class had chronic coughs, yeah, and the teachers too since we mingle with them and mark their books per lesson. Our classroom windows are higher, a child with a contagious airborne illness can infect the whole class in a matter of hours because of the congestion and improper aeration. Desks can offer a proper elevation for the learners to tap fresh air from the windows, think faster and reduce fatigue.

There are countless ways absence of seats in my classroom has impacted academic and extracurricular goals negatively, which I'd really like to bring to your attention but the few ones above, I believe, gives you the overall picture I am trying to paint.
Since it's been established desks are essential to achieving academic goals and vision, classroom management, enforcing discipline and correcting misbehavior, effective collaboration, offering continued support to learners with different abilities, among others, how can you help us improve the learning outcome for our next generation of leaders, change agents and workforce?

An inspector of schools one day walked in while I was teaching, he couldn't supervise the lesson. He just stood by the door, shook his head and left. That's how bad the situation is. The headteacher and I earlier this term organized a Parents and Teachers Association meeting to deliberate alternatives to increasing daily attendance rate with the return of rain and the lack of furniture, parents agreed to contribute money to buy a few desks at a time.

We need 42 desks for our classroom to accommodate the 167 learners which by next year will increase. Please help us raise 560 USD to purchase the required furniture.

Will you help contribute to this cause?

Thank you @CharlesObuk. We thank you for your contribution, because of it we're not where we first started. A learner will be able to sit on a desk because of you! Thank you
